The Whale & Ale Announces Live Jazz Mondays

Entertainment

San Pedro, CA, June 14,2006 - Every Monday night until further notice, The Buskers will play Jazz at The Whale & Ale from 6.43 to 9 p.m.
There will be no admission fee nor any minimum purchase.

The Buskers got their start in public performance by playing on the streets and at Farmer's Markets. It did not take long to find there was a market for their music.
Playing in front of a Jamba Juice in the Larchmont area, they picked up a two night a week gig that they have now enjoyed for ten months.  From their street playing came jazz at baby showers, real estate showings, house parties, receptions and club dates.

The Buskers' desire is to play straight ahead jazz that is listenable and not too loud. They find that people like that. The group consists of Paul Piercy on seven string guitar. Russ Jones on bass, and Kermit Welch playing an array of clarinets, flutes, and saxophones.

The Whale & Ale is LA's only Authentic British Restaurant & Pub south of Santa Monica. It opened in 1988 and re-opened in 1995, under the current ownership, to immediate critical acclaim. Now in it's eleventh year, entirely oak-paneled, it has a long oak bar with brass fittings, a balcony overlooking the piano lounge, fireplace & grand piano in the corner. See www.whaleandale.com for photos, menu & entertainment listings.

We can be found in the fun area of San Pedro (the business/dining/art gallery district), & the menu has grown to include many new dishes like Beef Wellington in Perigordine Sauce, Homemade Meat Pies, Salads, Pastas, Curries, Rosemary/Dijon baked rack of lamb, of course - Fish & Chips, Salmon & Swordfish.

When you add to the occasion a skilled mixer of Martinis, Manhattans, Old Fashioneds & the like, or fourteen imported rare Ales on tap, then you have a great lunch or dinner out.

Live entertainment on Friday (and now Monday Nights) - ample parking & all Major Credit Cards accepted.

Cedar Grove Mansion Inn & Restaurant

Cedar Grove Mansion Inn & Restaurant is a lovely ante-bellum home that dates back to 1840.  It is one of the premiere Victorian Bed & Breakfast's Inns in the country. It has it's own chapel, which makes it the ideal place to get married.  Colleen Small is the kind of owner who takes a "hands-on" approach, and she has a 1st class staff to meet all of your expectations. Andre's Restaurant is one of the finest restaurants in Vicksburg. The Vicksburg Battlefield Museum is worth a see.  Dan the curator of the museum is very knowledgeable, and can answer any questions you might have about the Vicksburg Campaign.

Gritty McDuffs

P_int5I mentioned in another post that I had the opportunity to visit Portland, Maine recently. While there, I happened upon a great little pub, Gritty McDuffs. I met several of the locals and found them to be extremely friendly.

Gritty's is a micro-brewery and they offer several varieties of ale and beer brewed on location. Though I don't imbibe with regularity, I really liked their Brown Ale and Scottish Ale varieties.

One thing you'll notice about the place is the fact that 100 or more ceramic beer steins adorn the ceiling above the bar. Those are cherished commodities reserved for only their best customers. In fact, should you be so fortunate to be awarded one, you'll get to keep that same mug until you either surrender it, fail to pay your tab, or die!

Gritty's has become a Maine institution, garnering many awards for Best Bar, Best Brew Pub and Best Beer. So, if you're ever up that way, just ask anyone how to get there. They will all know.

Memphis Eateries

If you ever happen to drive through Memphis (and it's not hard to do if you're traveling the mid-south or mid-west) there are a couple of eating establishments I heartily encourage you to visit, Huey's Midtown and Neely's BBQ on Mt. Moriah.

Now don't get me wrong. There are more great places to eat in Memphis than there are fleas on a dog (Hmm...not an analogy that stimulates the appetite is it?), but these two places are just something else. Huey's has the BEST hamburger in Memphis and beyond. Neely's, well Al Roker rated it one of the best BBQ places in the country.

Both places have plenty of atmosphere, though Huey's is a bit more boisterous than Neely's in my experience. Either way, you'll get a great meal and have fun too.

If neither of those places sound interesting, check out DiscoverOurTown.com's Memphis dining section.
